DETECTIVE UNITS/SUPV-MGMT (ICI)
This is an elective course within the Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigations (ICI). This course will focus on building and developing the skills of a detective supervisor sergeant) or manager (lieutenant) to effectively and efficiently run a detective unit. A failure to properly investigate a criminal case can and has led to criminals going free, convictions overturned and civil liability for a cause of action called "Negligent Investigation." Supervisors and managers who lack the proper training and experience to ensure that a criminal incident is properly investigated expose themselves and their agency to possible civil liability and punitive damages. This course will emphasize both leadership skills and interpersonal communication. Some experts believe that leadership skills are perishable skills. POST has already identified interpersonal communications as a perishable skill.

The ICI Fundamentals of Cybercrime Investigations course is an ICI Foundation Specialty course designed for peace officers currently assigned, or will be assigned, to investigate cybercrime investigations. This Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) Sexual Assault Course provides investigators with the skills and knowledge necessary to collaboratively, effectively, and objectively conduct sexual assault investigations. Upon completion, the student will be able to: interpret and apply sexual assault related laws; competently exercise their investigative skills to increase the likelihood of successful prosecution under California law; identify the importance of a sexual assault forensic medical examination as an investigative resource; understand victim dynamics and counterintuitive behaviors; and develop specific investigation and interrogation framing based on offender typology. This course meets the PC 13516(c) requirement, in which officers assigned to investigation duties which include the handling of cases involving sexual assault, sexual exploitation or sexual abuse of children, must successfully complete the course within six months of assignment.

This is an elective course of the Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigations (ICI).This course will address the unique needs of a law enforcement investigator who is responsible for investigating physical child abuse. The focus of this class will build on information gained from the basic 40 ICI Child Abuse course and will go in-depth on the issues surrounding these types of investigations, and teach advanced investigative techniques that will assist the law enforcement investigator in solving these cases and preparing them for successful prosecution. This class is intended for the investigator who has some previous Child Abuse experience. Actual case studies will be presented, discussed and analyzed. This is a Foundation Specialty course of Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigations (ICI) that will provide the basics for conducting investigations into fire or explosion incidents. This Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) Sexual Assault Course provides investigators with the skills and knowledge necessary to collaboratively, effectively, and objectively conduct sexual assault investigations. Upon completion, the student will be able to: interpret and apply sexual assault related laws; competently exercise their investigative skills to increase the likelihood of successful prosecution under California law; identify the importance of a sexual assault forensic medical examination as an investigative resource; understand victim dynamics and counterintuitive behaviors; and develop specific investigation and interrogation framing based on offender typology. This course meets the PC 13516(c) requirement, in which officers assigned to investigation duties which include the handling of cases involving sexual assault, sexual exploitation or sexual abuse of children, must successfully complete the course within six months of assignment.

The Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) Core Course is the prerequisite for all subsequent ICI Foundation Specialty Courses within this program. It is designed to enhance the effectiveness of the individual criminal investigator’s skills in performing the multi-disciplined, multi-leveled tasks necessary to successfully conduct comprehensive criminal investigations. Vehicle vs. pedestrian or bicycle crashes often result in severe injuries, escalating the importance of thoroughness and accuracy in the investigation and reconstruction processes. This course incorporates classroom lecture, demonstrations (through field exercises with crash test dummies, exercise as well as determining coefficient of friction and drag factors, speed estimates from various equations and crash testing, case preparation and courtroom testimony. Students will learn the math equations to model such collisions. Students will also learn how to determine first-contact positions of pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles to estimate the speed of a striking vehicle.

This Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) Sexual Assault Course provides investigators with the skills and knowledge necessary to collaboratively, effectively, and objectively conduct sexual assault investigations. Upon completion, the student will be able to: interpret and apply sexual assault related laws; competently exercise their investigative skills to increase the likelihood of successful prosecution under California law; identify the importance of a sexual assault forensic medical examination as an investigative resource; understand victim dynamics and counterintuitive behaviors; and develop specific investigation and interrogation framing based on offender typology. This course meets the PC 13516(c) requirement, in which officers assigned to investigation duties which include the handling of cases involving sexual assault, sexual exploitation or sexual abuse of children, must successfully complete the course within six months of assignment.
