This course provides updated legislative content of Penal Code Section 835a. This course also meets the Perishable Skills mandate. Lecture will promote understanding the importance of immediately controlling a suspect to minimize further injuries, avert additional crimes and avoid the use of excessive force. The practical application involves developed strategies and techniques, which have been proven as means to gain control of a physically, resistive suspect. Students will be taught how to obtain control in both standing and ground types of situations. Additionally, the students will enhance their proficiency in proper searching and handcuffing methods, ensuring the suspect is safely taken into custody. In collaboration with arrest and control, this course will review the use of the baton. Instruction will include legal justifications, department policies, and practical exercises to develop a higher understanding of the baton as a force option.
